History
Simi Valley’s roots trace back over 13,000 years to the Chumash people, who inhabited the region until the 1800s. The city’s name finds its origins in the Chumash villages of Shimiji and Ta’apu, reflecting the deep connection to the land. The incorporation of the city in 1969 under California’s general laws marked a pivotal moment, establishing a General-Law/council-manager form of government.
One fascinating historical note revolves around the 1795 land grant, San José de Nuestra Señora de Altagracia y Simí, given to Santiago Pico. Covering approximately 113,000 acres, the grant emphasized the second syllable of Simí in its pronunciation, making it “suh-MEE” rather than “SEE-me.”

Transportation
Simi Valley’s strategic location is complemented by its excellent transportation infrastructure. Highways 118, 23, and 101, along with Interstates 5, 405, and 210, provide convenient access. The city also relies on Union Pacific Railroad for freight, while Amtrak and Metrolink serve passenger needs.
